چکیده

conclusions this study revealed that serum iron markers (especially ferritin and transferrin) might be used as surrogate markers for both liver fibrosis and necroinflammatory activity. patients and methods eighty five patients with untreated hepatitis c chronic infection were investigated. . results twenty one patients (24.7%) had elevated serum iron levels, and 29 subjects (34.1%) had severe liver fibrosis. significantly elevated levels of serum iron (p < 0.05) and ferritin (p < 0.001), associated with lower levels of tibc (p < 0.05) were detected in patients with severe fibrosis compared tono/mild fibrosis. severe necroinflammatory activity was also significantly correlated with serum iron (p < 0.001), tibc (p < 0.05), and ferritin levels (p < 0.001). using multiple linear regression analysis, serum levels of ferritin and transferrin were the independent variables selected as being good predictors for advanced fibrosis and severe necroinflammatory activity. no significant correlations were detected between hcv viral load and iron markers. patients with chronic hepatitis c (chc) often have elevated serum iron markers, which may worsen liver injury. objectives the aim of this study was to investigate the possible correlations between iron metabolism serum markers, hcv viral load, and liver disease severity in treatment-naive patients with chronic hepatitis c infection.

Serum Iron Markers in Patients With Chronic Hepatitis C Infection

BACKGROUND Patients with chronic hepatitis C (CHC) often have elevated serum iron markers, which may worsen liver injury. OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to investigate the possible correlations between iron metabolism serum markers, HCV viral load, and liver disease severity in treatment-naive patients with chronic hepatitis C infection. PATIENTS AND METHODS Eighty five patients with ...

Sero-Epidemiology of Hepatitis E Infections in patients with chronic Hepatitis C virus infection in Jahrom, Southern Iran

Background and Aims: Co-infection of hepatitis E virus (HEV) in chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infected patients can develop and increase liver disease and hepatic complications in the world. The purpose of this study was to assess the prevalence of HEV infection in patients suffering from chronic HCV infection. Materials and Methods: Cross-sectional study testing anti-HEV antibodies in serum...

CHARACTERISTICS AND PREVALENCE OF OCCULT HEPATITIS B VIRUS INFECTION IN PATIENTS WITH HEPATITIS C IN IRAN

ABSTRACT Background: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection in patients who lack detectable hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) is called occult hepatitis B infection. Such infections have been frequently identified in patients with chronic hepatitis Cliver disease, but their prevalence is not known. Methods: 207 patients with chronic hepatitis C who were HCV -RNA and antiHCV positive were stu...

Abnormal serum iron markers in chronic hepatitis B virus infection may be because of liver injury

OBJECTIVE In patients with chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection, it is not known whether altered serum iron markers are directly because of the infection or the associated liver injury. We determined the serum iron status of patients with chronic HBV infection, and investigated whether it is HBV infection or HBV-related liver injury that likely causes abnormal serum iron markers in chronic...

The Absence of Hepatitis C Virus Infection Among Patients with Hepatitis B virus in Mashhad, Iran

Background and Aims: Many studies have provided evidence for the role of hepatitis B and C viruses in the development of liver cancer. Although the routine treatment is available for both conditions, no definite guideline is available to treat patients dually infected with HBV and HCV. This study was performed to determine the frequency of HBV/HCV-coinfection in Mashhad, North-East of Iran. Mat...

Coinfection with HIV-1 Alleviates Iron Accumulation in Patients with Chronic Hepatitis C Virus Infection

Most chronically-infected hepatitis C virus (HCV) patients have increased levels of iron in the liver. Iron overload reduces sustained responses to antiviral therapy, leading to more rapid progression to liver cirrhosis and the development of hepatocellular carcinoma. However, it is still unclear how HIV-1 infection affects iron status in patients chronically infected with HCV. The present stud...
